Highlights of our history

Eurogiro was created in the early 1990'es by a group of European postal organisations to modernize their common cross border payment business and prepare themselves for stronger competition. First goal was to abolish exchange of paper and streamline procedures.

Gradually, members scope, reach, services and currencies were expanded.

Milestones:

  • First payments exchanged on Eurogiro net using unique bulking concept (as credits in 1992)
  • Eurogiro Network A/S created as limited public company in 1993
  • Japan Post first member outside Europe in 1994, Barid Al Maghrib in Morocco, National Bank of Canada, ECT Brazil and ANZ in Australia followed later
  • Eurogiro Money Order is introduced in 1995 and urgent cash product with Western Union in 1998
  • First service provider for single point of settlement - EUR in 2002 (later USD)
  • SWIFT gateway in 2004
  • Eurogiro noted as carrier for SEPA credits in 2008 (and later direct debits)
  • Framework for accessing Eurogiro via multilateral agreement in 2009
  • SMS notifications available from 2010 
  • UPU-Eurogiro Interconnection opened for live traffic in 2012
