Eurogiro celebrates 20 years’ anniversary
in Budapest
The 2013 Community Meeting in Eurogiro focused on the development of joint business
opportunities between members. But this year’s event was also a celebration of 20 years’ activities
in a rapidly changing industry and a good reason to look ahead and look back with a greater
perspective
Chaired by the newly appointed Eurogiro
CEO, Mr. Michel Stuijt, members from the
Eurogiro Board availed themselves to the
delegates to discuss the main industry trends
which impact member business and the
Eurogiro strategies which will continue to cre-
ate value to members in the coming decades.
Many questions and answers were voiced.
Particular interest was put on the importance
of Eurogiro being flexible and open to new
payment channels, such as mobile and card,
whilst maintaining a high cost efficiency and
compliance with requirements within anti-
money laundering and anti-terrorist funding
legislation. Many speakers acknowledged the
value of collaboration within the community
and with partners, and the announcement of
Ericsson as a new Eurogiro member was very
well received.
Payment market trends impacting
the business
The meeting this year also featured speakers
from the industry to set the perspective for
member ambitions and to offer views
on Eurogiro from outside the community.
Mr. Christian Eigen-Zucchi from World Bank
outlined their findings of a steadily growing
remittance market with great impact on the
quality of life in beneficiary communities.
World Bank was advocating an agenda of
improved transparency to reduce cost of
remittances and to grow financial inclusion.
More competition and transparency on prizes
and conditions would foster better conditions
for beneficiaries. Regrettably, in the findings
of World Bank, the postal organisations were
lagging behind MTO´s and banks in rates of
disclosing their remittance prizes.
Corridors count
Enabling growth in a number of corridors
between Eurogiro members remains high on
the priority list. Quite a few members have
corridors open to all of the markets that their
clients’ request, but some members still have
a large potential for increasing their business
to other members. The Eurogiro community
includes some of the largest remittance cor-
ridors in the world, all of which have not yet
substantialised as mutual businesses. Thus,
the confirmation from Mr. Barma, India Post,
that his organisation was ready for business
was welcomed by the audience. Also this
year, the Eurogiro PR and Marketing Council
arranged a session on corridor marketing.
Steven McGinnes, of Hummingbird, set the
scene by outlining the value of a vision and a
strong brand. Margret Dreyer, PR & Marketing
Council member, demonstrated the commit-
ment to support members in their corridor
marketing efforts and emphasized that getting
the target group definitions and approach right
was essential to success. Case histories from
Philippine Post and Correos Spain under-
pinned the message that collaboration across
corridors is fruitful. In the subsequent work-
shops members shared their best practices
and some pinpointed the critical importance of
services at the receiving end being competi-
tive, in availability and speed as well as pricing.
On a recommendation from the Hungarian
Post, a lovely, newly-restored building, the
Boscolo New York Hotel dating from 1884, was
chosen to frame the 2013 community meeting.
The Hungarian Post hosted the event with
great hospitality and efficiency.
Next year’s meeting will be held in Istanbul.
