Eurogiro builds relationships during UPU Congress
Eurogiro attended the UPU Postal Payments Committee 6 meeting as an Observer at the 25th
Universal Postal Congress, and held a Eurogiro workshop during the same week in Doha.
These events proved to be a great opportunity for Eurogiro to speak to senior representatives
of postal organisations from around the world attending the UPU Congress and to further grow
and develop relationships
Held every four years, this year’s UPU Con-
gress was hosted by the government of Qatar
in Doha from 24 September to 15 October
with the overall theme of "New world, new
strategy", aptly reflecting the tremendous
changes affecting today's global postal sector.
The UPU presentations and discussions de-
monstrated the growing importance of deve-
loping payment and other financial services
as the postal sector continues to play a critical
role in fueling countries’ social and economic
development. The Committee 6 meeting
highlighted the need for postal organisations
to build more payments partnerships beyond
the postal community, consider new payments
channels such as mobile banking, and empha-
sised the opportunity playing a central role in
promoting greater financial inclusion.
Eurogiro’s workshop held on 26 September
complemented the Postal Payments Commit-
tee discussions during the UPU Congress with
a more in-depth review of Eurogiro services
and an opportunity to bring together members
and prospective members for a workshop,
lunch and a ‘cocktail’ party. The events were
well attended and received by UPU Congress
attendees who valued them as an opportunity
to network and learn more about Eurogiro’s
well-established international payments com-
munity and network. In addition to Eurogiro
staff presentations during the workshop, Ms.
Elena Restano of Poste Italiane and Mr. Nuno
Domingos of Swiss Post PostFinance shared
case story presentations on the services and
successful experiences of being a Eurogiro
member. Ms. Sylvie Solignac, Chairman of
the Eurogiro Board and Head of the Interna-
tional Office at La Banque Postale joined the
lunch to meet the attendees. Many Eurogiro
members, including senior representatives
from Japan Post Bank, Hellenic Post, Bulgaria
Post, Correios of Brazil, Korea Post, Magyar
Posta of Hungary, Polish Post and Ukraine
Post, attended the event in support of building
new Eurogiro relationships with existing and
prospective members.

A few Steps to effective Corridor marketing
Eurogiro issues its first guideline for members about to embark on corridor marketing.
The small booklet is produced by the Eurogiro PR & Marketing Council and Eurogiro and
draws heavily on members’ practical experience, in particular within workers’ remittances
The value of the Eurogiro connection and
membership is closely tied to the business
generated between members. This entails
marketing to communities which often have
a culture and language which differs from
the typical target groups. ‘Ethnic marketing’,
as this activity is often labelled, requires an
understanding and a set of skills which may
be scarce in the sending country, but are
widely available in the receiving country.
Bringing the two parties together has great
advantages.
With this initiative, Eurogiro consolidates
its role as a facilitator of knowledge sharing
in the community. It is a natural extension of
the shared network services, the payment
products and the multilateral agreement
framework previously developed by Eurogiro.
Eurogiro spans members with long term ex-
perience in securing financial inclusion for mi-
grants as well as other groups in their society,
along with members from regions where the
business is in its initial phases. When these
are brought together, new opportunities occur.
The PR & Marketing Council consists of Jas-
minka Bosnjak, Postal Savings Bank Serbia,
Margret Dreyer, Deutsche Postbank, Eric
de Feydeau, National Bank of Canada and
Anita Rohrer, Swiss Post PostFinance. The
group advises Eurogiro on matters relating to
marketing between members. The Eurogiro
PR & Marketing Council has been active
since 2001.
